Seattle to Portland Bike Ride!

The Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic (or the STP as it is most commonly known) is an annual ride organized by the Cascade Bicycle Club and sponsored by Group Health. It is almost exactly 200 miles through the beautiful and nearly flat stretches of Washington State along the I-5 corridor. Riders get to experience great Western Washington summer weather, amazing views of volcanoes and the Cascades, cross the Columbia river, and arrive into the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon. That is, of course, if they have enough strength left to enjoy much of anything except a cold Gatorade (or a beer) in the shade.

People ride it in one or two days. They ride it on tandems, unicycles, mountain bikes, very light bikes that cost more than many cars, and on cruisers whose comfortable seats look increasingly like a good idea as the ride progresses. The ride included women, men, hippies, hipsters, youngsters, children, parents, grand-parents, and even a few Italians.

slow shoal creek to restart for the fall

I decided to give iMapMyFitness another try for this. I have used Cyclometer and RunKeeper in the past (all on iPhone 3G-S) and so far I like Cyclometer best as the app. iMapMy* has more sharing options, but also more website noise. Cyclometer doesn't really have web integration, but plugs in nicely into Google Maps API instead. Runkeeper was too broken the last time I tried, but it may have gotten better since it saw some upgrades recently. For this ride, the conditions were hot and windy, and the pavement was much more broken up than usual. Shoal creek is largely under repair and 35th St crossing was dodgy at best. The pool at the end was nice though.
